Petition to modify the Government’s approach to the Copenhagen Treaty, December 2009.

Dear Paul Keetch MP

I am writing to you on the Climate Change Day of Action to present a petition from members of the Golden Valley Environment Group which urges the Government to adopt higher targets on the reduction of C02 emissions at the Copenhagen treaty negotiations.

You will be aware that the European Union has this week adopted a similar target to that in our petition (a 95% greenhouse gas emissions reduction target by 2050) and has moved some way towards our 40% target for 2020, but falls short with a negotiating position limited to a 30% reduction. We regard the 40% reduction target by 2020 as equally important to the longer term targets because of the urgent need to stabilise C02 emissions by 2015.

You were very supportive of our approach to strengthening the Climate Change Bill and we look forward to your supporting the aims of this petition. The Government should be made to adopt targets which reassert our international leadership in the campaign to combat global warming.

Yours sincerely

Peter Gunn-Wilkinson
Member of the Golden Valley Environment Group
